9 Things That TRULY Make a House a Home

1. Love is the most important thing that makes a house a home

While the rest of these aren’t really in order, love is definitely the most important one of all. As long as you have that, anyplace can become home. I’d know I’d rather live in a cave in the woods surrounded by loved ones than in a castle on a hill all alone. How about you?

2. Home is where we share our hopes and dreams

A true home is a place that’s safe to share our hopes. It’s where we find inspiration and discover our passions. Where we’re free to make mistakes, and where our loved ones give us the courage to go after our dreams.

3. It’s where we make our fondest memories

Home is where we share laughter and make our greatest memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime. It’s where there’s always room for those we love, and everyone always belongs (even the people we sometimes disagree with!).

4. Home is where we find shelter from even the worst of life’s storms…

Life is full of storms, some far worse than others. Home is the one place where we can always find shelter, where we can go to feel safe and secure. It’s where we’re reminded that even the worst storms can’t last forever. It’s where we find our optimism, our sunshine, and our will to keep going through the darkest days.

5. …and where the light is always on

More than just a shelter from a storm, home is a lighthouse that shines bright through the foggiest night so that we can always find out way back to it. No matter how old we get, no matter how far away we go, it’s the one place that always leaves a light on for us.

6. Home is the one place we can go and not be questioned

Speaking of “how far we go,” at some point we all leave home. Someday, our kids will leave it, too. But even if we travel across the world, we’ll always know that it’s there waiting for us. We know that if we fall or fail, we can go back and find comfort without question.

7. It’s a place that stays the same no matter how much you change

The quote below by F. Scott Fitzgerald says it all. Home stays the same no matter how much we change. I don’t mean that in the outward sense. Sure, the décor may be different. Heck, maybe even the location is different. But that feeling that we get when we walk through the door is always the same, and that’s just so reassuring.

8. It truly is the nicest word there is!

There’s truly no nicer word than “home,” and there’s nothing quite like coming back to it. If you don’t believe me, pay attention to how you feel the next time you walk in the door after a vacation. It’s like wrapping yourself up in the comfiest pair of pajamas and snuggling deep into a warm, cozy blanket.

9. Home is people, plain and simple

Home is not a place or a structure. It’s not about the four walls. It’s about the people that live within those walls. So, it doesn’t matter if you spend your entire life in one place or move around every year. As long as you’re surrounded by the people you love and who love you in return, you’re home.

Bottom line, whether you live in the grandest mansion in Beverly Hills, a shanty by the sea, or the teeniest tiny home in the woods, size truly doesn’t matter when it comes to what truly makes a house a home. Neither does location, décor or pretty much anything else that you can buy with money.

Home truly is where the heart is, and without heart, even the grandest manor is nothing more than a house.
